If is time to repair an existing dock and boathouse or build brand new, there are some things you need to know.

  1. What is the condition of the existing dock or boathouse.  Can it be repaired or will it need to be replaced or rebuilt?
  2. How will you use the dock?  Do you need to tie boats and other water craft?  Are you looking for a safe place to swim away from boat traffic.  Are you looking for a sitting or entertaining area? Are you planning to repair, renovate or build a boathouse or other structure on or near the dock?
  3. Is there an existing structure?  Will it need to be moved, raised, straightened or removed?
  4. What are your lot lines and projected lot lines from shore?   Do you have a current survey?
  5. What are the town or township bylaws governing shoreline construction?
  6. What are the Ministry of Natural Resources rules in the area?
  7. What are the rules of the Department of Oceans and Fisheries that will effect your shoreline development?
  8. What is the water depth, both at shore and where your dock will end? Are there any obstructions under the surface of the water?
  9. What are the water, wind and ice conditions in your area?  Prevailing winds could have an impact on placement of boat slips,  as could areas of heavy boat traffic and the type of boat you own or plan to buy.
  10. How much does the water level vary?
